Union Commercial is managed by the two sons of the Group's founder, Michael and Pantelis "Pete" Scufalos and Yiannis (“John K”) Karagiannidis, who, following a 20-year tenure with the company as Commercial Manager, was promoted in 2019 to Managing Director. Michael Scufalos serves as President and Pete Scufalos as Senior Director.


Since 1978 the Company has focused exclusively on the management of dry cargo vessels, principally in the handysize, supra/ultra and kamsar sectors, selling off Container and Cargo Services, and since 1999, benefiting from the combination of improved communications and the availability of a more skilled workforce in Greece, has redeployed all commercial management activities to Greece.


The Company received its ISM Document of Compliance by Bureau Veritas in November of 1997. Union Commercial presently employs twenty-eight shore-based staff and at any one time approximately four hundred oceangoing seamen. Union Commercial's currently managed-fleet consists of fifteen handy/supramax/ultramax log/bulk carriers, built mainly in Japan, ranging in year of build from 2011 to 2019 plus two state of the art 40,000 dwt log/bulk carrier super eco design currently on order. Most of the managed fleet is classed with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and flagged under Marshall Islands.


Union Commercial enjoys close commercial relationships with major European and Asian charterers including, amongst others Pacific Basin, Cargill , J. Lauritzen, Clipper, Swire Bulk, Drylog, NS United, Navision Shipping A/S, Baltnav A/S and Centurion Bulk.
